Reflection from Rome

 The experience of Rita Refalo, an Apostolic Oblate from Pro Sanctitate Latvia, and her reflections on the recent Jubilee. Her journey is a beautiful testament to faith and global unity. Kristus ir mūsu cerība!

Piedalīties Jauniešu jubilejā Romā bija unikāla pieredze! Tā bija kā žēlastības lietus, kas nolija pār miljonu jauniešu no visas pasaules. Kāpēc mēs organizējām šo svētceļojumu? Tāpēc, ka, balstoties uz iepriekšējo pieredzi, mēs zinām: šie jubilejas svētceļojumi vienmēr ir iespēja un īstais laiks atjaunotnei, lielai dalīšanās pieredzei, kultūras un baznīcas iepazīšanai, priekam un brālībai.

No Latvijas devāmies ceļā 36 jauniešu sastāvā. Mūsu grupa bija īpaša, jo tajā bija latviešu, vjetnamiešu un itāļu jaunieši. Tādējādi jau pati grupa mums palīdzēja piedzīvot kultūru apmaiņu, brālību, dialogu un savstarpēju uzklausīšanu. Kopā ar mums bija tēvs Staņislavs Prikulis un mēs, "Pro Sanctitate" apustuliskās oblātes – Liliāna un es, Rita.

Mēs sekojām Jauniešu jubilejas komisijas piedāvātajai programmai: lūgšanu brīži, kultūra un brālība. Katru dienu sākām ar rīta lūgšanu, kam sekoja lieliska itāļu kafija un brokastis. Tad devāmies ceļā: apmeklējām četras galvenās bazilikas un veicām svētceļojumu, ejot caur to Svētajām durvīm.

Tā bija spēcīga garīga pieredze – iet pa svēto pēdām: Svētā Pētera, Svētā Pāvila, Svētā Jāņa un Marijas, Dieva Mātes. Iešana caur Svētajām durvīm (viena no būtiskajām Jubilejas zīmēm) bija dziļš pārdzīvojums – tas katram no mums nozīmēja pieņemt Kristu, kurš ir mūsu Durvis uz patieso ceļu un laimi. Citas svarīgas zīmes bija grēksūdze, svētceļojuma gājiens un lūgšana. Staigāt pa Romu nozīmē staigāt pa pēdām daudziem svētajiem, kuri ar savu piemēru ir iezīmējuši visas Baznīcas vēsturi.

Tāpēc mēs apmeklējām arī citas svētvietas: Santa Maria sopra Minerva, kur atrodas Svētās Katrīnas no Sjēnas un Svētā Pjēra Džordžo Frasāti mirstīgās atliekas; Santa Maria in Trastevere; Svētā Ignācija no Lojolas baznīcu; Il Gesù baznīcu un daudzas citas. Mēs apciemojām arī mūsu dibinātāja, Dieva kalpa Guljelmo Džakvintas (Guglielmo Giaquinta), māju. Pieredze kopā ar mūsu kustības "Pro Sanctitate" jauniešiem bija ļoti bagātinoša – tā bija ticības un kultūras apmaiņa. Īpašs notikums bija katakombu apmeklējums – šoreiz tās bija Priscillas katakombas, kur redzams vissenākais Dieva Mātes attēls.

Un kā gan nepieminēt unikālo pieredzi ar Svēto Tēvu Leonu XIV. Mums bija liels prieks redzēt viņu no tuvuma gan Jauniešu jubilejas atklāšanas Svētajā Misē, gan Tor Vergatā noslēguma vigīlijā kopā ar jauniešiem.

Ejot pa ielām, valdīja neaprakstāms prieks – mēs sastapām jauniešus no visas pasaules, visu laiku dziedājām un gavilējām, apliecinot, ka Kristus patiesi ir mūsu Cerība. Redzēt mūsu jauniešus tik piepildītus ar mīlestību un mieru ir dārgums, ko es no šīs Jubilejas nesu savā sirdī. Tas mums dod pārliecību, ka Baznīcai ir cerība! Miljons jauniešu Tor Vergatas klusumā kopā ar Svēto Tēvu pielūdza Kungu. Dziedāt "Christ is our Hope" – himnu, ko šai Jauniešu jubilejai sacerējis Marko Frīzina – bija prieks, ko nav viegli aprakstīt!

Šo prieku mēs joprojām nesam sirdīs un izdzīvojam ikreiz, kad trešdienās tiekamies ar mūsu jauniešiem Rīgā. Jā, mēs esam pasaules nākotnes cerība – ar Kristu un ne vieni paši!

Christ is our Hope!

Participating in the Youth Jubilee in Rome was a unique experience! It was like a rain of grace falling over one million young people from all around the world. Why did we organize this pilgrimage? Because, based on previous experience, we know that these Jubilee pilgrimages are always an opportunity and the right time for renewal, a great sharing of experiences, cultural and ecclesiastical growth, joy, and brotherhood.

We set out from Latvia with a group of 36 young people. Our group was special because it included Latvian, Vietnamese, and Italian youths. This diversity helped us experience cultural exchange, brotherhood, dialogue, and mutual listening firsthand. We were accompanied by Father Stanislavs Prikulis and the Apostolic Oblates of Pro Sanctitate—Liliana and myself, Rita.

We followed the program provided by the Youth Jubilee Commission: moments of prayer, culture, and brotherhood. Every day began with morning prayer, followed by excellent Italian coffee and breakfast. Then we set off to visit the four major basilicas and completed the pilgrimage by passing through their Holy Doors.

It was a powerful spiritual experience to walk in the footsteps of the saints—St. Peter, St. Paul, St. John, and Mary, the Mother of God. Passing through the Holy Door (one of the essential signs of living the Jubilee) was a profound experience for each of us; it meant accepting Christ, who is our Door to the true path and true happiness. Other significant signs were confession, the act of pilgrimage, and prayer. Walking through Rome means walking in the footsteps of many saints who lived there and marked the history of the Universal Church with their example and holiness.

Therefore, we also visited other holy sites: Santa Maria sopra Minerva, where the remains of St. Catherine of Siena and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati rest; Santa Maria in Trastevere; the Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola; Il Gesù; and many others. We also visited the home of our founder, the Servant of God Guglielmo Giaquinta. The time spent with the youth of our Pro Sanctitate movement was enriching—a true exchange of faith, spirituality, and culture. A special highlight was the visit to the catacombs, specifically the Catacombs of Priscilla, which contain the oldest known image of the Mother of God.

And how could we not mention the unique experience with the Holy Father, Leo XIV. It was a great joy to see him up close both at the opening Holy Mass of the Youth Jubilee and during the closing vigil at Tor Vergata.

Walking the streets, joy prevailed—we met young people from all over the world, singing and shouting with joy, testifying that Christ is truly our Hope. Seeing our youth filled with such joy, love, and peace is a treasure I carry in my heart from this Jubilee. It gives us the certainty that the Church has hope! One million young people, in the silence of Tor Vergata, adored the Lord together with the Holy Father. Singing "Christ is our Hope"—the hymn composed for this Youth Jubilee by Marco Frisina—was a joy that is not easily described!

We still carry this joy in our hearts and live it every time we meet with our youth in Riga on Wednesdays. Yes, we are the hope for the future of the world—with Christ and never alone!
